2 Explain various types of operating systems.

Ans. There are various types of operating systems. These are listed as follows:

  • Batch Operating System: Some computer systems do only one thing at a time. The list of instructions is carried out one after the other. Such systems are called serial systems. The operating system where programs are collected in a batch or a group before the execution starts is called a batch operating system. Each task in the batch system is called a job. It is very simple to manage memory in the batch operating system.

There is only one processor that is being shared by multiple processes. Such an operating system increases CPU utilization because the CPU never remains idle. A multiprogramming operating system keeps many jobs in the main memory at one time.
  • Multi-Processor Operating System: A multi-processor operating system has more than one processor. They share a common clock, input, output memory, system clock, and sometimes memory also. Two processes can run parallel in this type of operating system.
  • Distributed Operating System: A distributed operating system requires networking for its operation. It runs on multiple machines and also controls the resources at remote sites. t provides the facility of resource sharing among multiple systems. It runs on multiple and independent CPUs.
